Sustainability

We hear the word sustainability a lot. But what does it mean?

We tend to think of renewable fuel sources, reducing carbon emissions, protecting environments and keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance.

We hear the word sustainability a lot. But what does it mean?

We tend to think of renewable fuel sources, reducing carbon emissions, protecting environments and keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance.

There is more to it than that

Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

At its heart sustainability comes down to the kind of future we are leaving for the next generation. We believe that adopting sustainable practices, large or small, can have a considerable impact. That is why sustainable practices underpin everything we do and we are constantly looking for ways to be more planet-friendly.

When you visit us, we want to make sure that you are not just buying great food and drink; you are supporting people and the planet.

We recognise the need to develop a new approach to how caterers work; a model built to proactively reduce our environmental impact, promote biodiversity and support social enterprise. One of the cornerstones of our sustainable mission is our sourcing programme.

How we do it

We are working with LEAP (Livestock, Environment and People) researchers at the University of Oxford to reduce our environmental impact to support a healthy planet; our approach is rigorous and transparent.

The global average consumption of meat and dairy is rising, driven by increasing incomes and population growth. The growing demand for meat matters as its consumption has significant effects on people’s health and livestock production can have major environmental impacts.

Making our menu our greatest ally and tool for meaningful change.  Our objectives are:

  • Reduce our environmental impact

  • Raise awareness of the environmental impact of our food

  • Understand and improve our social footprint

  • Focus on sustainable development goals

The proof is in the sandwich

  • We have a British-first sourcing policy with over 90% of our fresh produce coming from British farmers.
  • We have saved over 10,000 single-use coffee bags from being used through the introduction of the Ernie Coffee Round.

  • We have joined the reuse revolution with Keepcup and encourage our customers to take one home.

  • For those who believe in good old-fashioned recycling, we also supply ReCUP cups. ReCUP’s use EarthCoating® to make their cups fully recyclable in conventional paper recycling systems.

  • All non-reusable cups we supply can either be recycled or composted.

  • We champion several B-Corp and Social Enterprise businesses including Toast Ale, Divine Chocolate, Life Water and Lemon-Aid to name a few.
